(Chinhphu.vn) – Là người vinh dự được tham gia nhiều chiến dịch, trận đánh cả trong kháng chiến chống Pháp, chống Mỹ và các cuộc chiến tranh bảo vệ biên giới Tây Nam, biên giới phía Bắc, nhưng Điện Biên Phủ là phần ký ức đặc biệt, khó mờ phai đối với Trung tướng Đặng Quân Thụy.
Một cuộc chiến lớn và niềm tin chiến thắng
Trung tướng Đặng Quân Thụy, nguyên là Phó Chủ tịch Quốc hội, nguyên Chủ tịch Hội Cựu chiến binh Việt Nam, người đúng 70 năm về trước là cán bộ của Ban Tác chiến tiền phương trong chiến dịch Điện Biên Phủ.
Trong cuốn sách ảnh tổng kết về cuộc đời trận mạc của mình, riêng chiến dịch Điện Biên Phủ, Trung tướng Đặng Quân Thụy đã tổng kết lại 8 việc chính ông đã làm. Là cán bộ tác chiến, ông cũng lăn lộn tận chiến hào với các chiến sĩ, từ chiến trường Lào đến đồi Him Lam, đồi A1, sân bay Mường Thanh…
Ông có mặt từ những ngày đầu cho đến khi kết thúc Chiến dịch Điện Biên Phủ. “Đầu tháng giêng năm 1954, tôi nhận nhiệm vụ đi lập đài quan sát trận địa địch, cùng anh em trinh sát pháo binh và công binh leo lên một ngọn núi cao. Đường rất khó đi, phải nhờ dân giúp mới lên đến đỉnh. Lúc ấy thật sự tôi chưa hình dung hết quy mô trận đánh tương lai. Song tôi biết mình sẽ tham dự một cuộc chiến lớn và tin tưởng quân ta sẽ thắng”, ông nhớ lại.
Trên đỉnh núi, qua ống nhòm pháo rõ đến 10 km, tổ tác chiến tiền phương thấy trong lòng chảo Điện Biên quân Pháp nhảy dù tăng cường lực lượng, phát quang cây cối, chiếm nhà dân, đào hầm hào chuẩn bị trận địa.
Nhiều ngày bám trụ trên đài, tổ tác chiến có nhiệm vụ ghi chép lại cụ thể, chi tiết từng vị trí quan trọng của địch để bộ phận phía sau làm cơ sở, phối hợp với lực lượng trinh sát bản đồ báo cáo chỉ huy xây dựng kế hoạch tác chiến.
Trung tướng Đặng Quân Thụy cho biết: “Niềm tin chiến thắng bắt nguồn từ mùa hè 1953, khi Bộ Tổng tham mưu lập một tổ nghiên cứu 24 người trong rừng lim căn cứ Định Hóa (Thái Nguyên) để “chuẩn bị lý luận đánh tập đoàn cứ điểm”.
Bộ tiên đoán địch sẽ phòng ngự theo mô hình tập đoàn cứ điểm, địch đóng thành nhiều cứ điểm, trong ngoài liên kết và có chi viện của pháo binh, của máy bay. Điểm nhấn quan trọng là khi một cứ điểm bị tấn công thì các cứ điểm khác hỗ trợ rất nhanh.
Rút kinh nghiệm từ trận đánh tập đoàn cứ điểm Nà Sản năm trước không thành công, với rất nhiều sơ đồ và các sa bàn được xây dựng, anh em trong ban nghiên cứu rút ra phương án tác chiến: Phải đánh tập hợp để phá thế liên hoàn, có nghĩa là phải áp dụng cả ba kiểu đánh bóc vỏ, đánh thọc sâu và đánh phản kích nhiều lần, đồng thời phải kiềm chế pháo binh. Khi đánh một cứ điểm phải kiềm chế chi viện của cứ điểm bên cạnh.
Cách đánh tập đoàn cứ điểm đã được thảo ra, Bộ Tổng tham mưu triển khai tập huấn cán bộ và cho diễn tập thực địa. Các đơn vị đã chia thành quân xanh quân đỏ, tập trận giả, thử những tình huống mấu chốt khi đánh tập đoàn cứ điểm. Từ đó, các đơn vị đều được phổ biến cách đánh này.
Điện Biên Phủ nóng dần lên với từng nước cờ được tính toán thận trọng của hai bộ thống soái giữa mùa đông buốt giá. Người cán bộ tác chiến cũng không đứng ngoài những tháng ngày cân não này.
Lúc này, thực dân Pháp tập trung quân hình thành cứ điểm Điện Biên Phủ với số quân đông, hoả lực mạnh, công sự vững chắc, các tướng tá Pháp và Mỹ xác nhận đây là “một tập đoàn cứ điểm đáng sợ”, “một pháo đài bất khả xâm phạm” án ngữ miền Tây Bắc nước ta, kiểm soát liên thông với Thượng Lào, thách thức quân chủ lực Việt Minh vào tấn công để tiêu diệt.
Trung tướng Đặng Quân Thụy nhớ lại, trước tình huống khó khăn đó, Bộ Chính trị, Bác Hồ đã chủ trương phân tán địch ra để đánh: “Bác Hồ xòe bàn tay ra để anh em hiểu được phân tán địch. Thực tế như thế trong chiến dịch Đông Xuân, ta hình thành 5 hướng đánh, Điện Biên Phủ là trọng điểm rồi nhưng hướng quan trọng là Đồng bằng sông Hồng, thứ 3 là Tây Nguyên, Thứ tư là Trung Lào, Hạ Lào, thứ 5 là Nam Bộ. Như vậy, địch muốn tập trung nhưng ta mở ra 5 hướng như thế thì buộc họ phải phân tán ra đối phó với 5 hướng đó. Đó cũng là cơ sở tạo điều kiện chiến thắng”.
Trước thực tế địch tăng cường lực lượng, vũ khí và xây dựng công sự vững chắc, Đại tướng Võ Nguyên Giáp chỉ huy mặt trận đã kịp thời thay đổi phương châm tác chiến chuyển từ “đánh nhanh thắng nhanh” sang “đánh chắc tiến chắc”.
Theo Trung tướng Đặng Quân Thụy, đây là một quyết định khó khăn nhưng là quyết định đúng đắn, phù hợp, sát thực tế, nhằm bảo toàn lực lượng và chuẩn bị chắc chắn hơn cho chiến thắng. Quyết định đó thể hiện quyết tâm của người tư lệnh mặt trận, tạo ra sự tin tưởng của người cán bộ, chiến sỹ cấp dưới rất lớn.
Xoay chuyển tình thế
“Tất nhiên chiến thắng đến không hề dễ dàng với chúng ta”, Trung tướng Đặng Quân Thụy chia sẻ. Phân khu Bắc của địch bị tiêu diệt nhanh chóng trong đợt 1 của chiến dịch. Nhưng khi đợt tấn công thứ 2 ở dãy đồi phía đông thuộc phân khu Trung tâm, các đơn vị đều không giành được thắng lợi như dự kiến.
Từ sau khi mất phân khu Bắc, địch hoàn toàn giữ thế phòng ngự. Những trận đánh phản kích chỉ nhằm ngăn cản không cho trận địa chiến hào của ta đến gần. Hy vọng của địch vẫn là lợi dụng ưu thế về địa hình và binh lực, vũ khí tập trung để đánh bại cuộc tiến công của ta như chúng đã làm được ở Nà Sản trước đó.
Trung đoàn 98 đánh đồi C1 sau thắng lợi ban đầu thì địch phản kích mạnh không tiến tiếp được.
Trung đoàn 174 để lỡ yếu tố bất ngờ khi đánh đồi A1 do đường dây liên lạc bị đứt nên không nhận được lệnh tấn công, tạo cơ hội cho địch phản kích dữ dội. Lực lượng của ta tổn thất nhiều khi vượt qua cửa mở… Hai bên ở thế giằng co hằng tháng ròng.
Trong lúc này, Đảng ủy Bộ tư lệnh Mặt trận đã có phương pháp làm xoay chuyển tình thế khó khăn khi nhận thấy một số chiến sĩ có dao động trong tư tưởng lo ngại nguy cơ không thực hiện được chiến dịch Điện Biên Phủ.
Nắm chắc được diễn biến tư tưởng, Đảng ủy Bộ Tư lệnh mặt trận đã nhanh chóng quyết định Tổ chức cuộc họp kiểm điểm. Tư lệnh Mặt trận Võ Nguyên Giáp đã tổng kết, đánh giá những mặt ưu điểm, đồng thời phê phán nghiêm khắc những tư tưởng giảm quyết tâm, ngại khó khăn, gian khổ.
Phê phán những tư tưởng đó là trở ngại cho thắng lợi chiến dịch và xu hướng phải giải quyết tư tưởng cho tốt. Đồng thời xác định phải tổ chức thành một đợt sinh hoạt chính trị sâu rộng để củng cố quyết tâm.
Trung tướng Đặng Quân Thụy nhận định: “Đó là chủ trương rất đúng đắn, sau khi hội nghị, về các đơn vị tổ chức lại sinh hoạt, kiểm điểm lại, đánh giá lại những mặt chưa làm được, những vấn đề mình còn thiếu sót như thế nào và ảnh hưởng đến quyết tâm như thế nào để củng cố nâng cao quyết tâm cho tốt và tìm ra giải pháp. Từ sư đoàn, trung đoàn, tiểu đoàn cho đến cán bộ cơ sở đều có sinh hoạt chính trị như là sinh hoạt ở trên theo chỉ thị của Đại tướng ở hội nghị”.
Ngay sau đó đợt sinh hoạt chính trị đã diễn ra ở tất cả các sư đoàn, trung đoàn, tiểu đoàn cho đến cán bộ cơ sở trên toàn mặt trận, đã củng cố, nâng cao thêm một bước ý chí quyết tâm chiến đấu, khắc phục mọi khó khăn cho cả chỉ huy và chiến sỹ.
Ông và đồng đội rất hân hoan khi được đọc “Thư kêu gọi các chiến sĩ Điện Biên Phủ đẩy mạnh cuộc thi đua đánh tỉa quân địch” của Đại tướng, Tổng tư lệnh Võ Nguyên Giáp.
Trung tướng nhớ trong thư có đoạn: “Để làm cho địch càng ngày càng bị tiêu hao mệt mỏi, tinh thần sút kém, thương vong chồng chất, để làm cho địch luôn luôn lo sợ và căng thẳng, ăn không ngon, ngủ không yên, bất cứ lúc nào cũng có thể bị bắn chết, để tạo điều kiện cho quân ta giành được những thắng lợi lớn hơn, tiến tới tiêu diệt toàn bộ quân địch ở Điện Biên Phủ. Tôi kêu gọi: Toàn thể các chiến sĩ bắn súng trường, các chiến sĩ bắn súng máy, các chiến sĩ bắn súng cối, các chiến sĩ pháo binh, hãy phát huy cao độ tinh thần tích cực diệt địch, nỗ lực thi đua đánh tỉa quân địch ở Điện Biên Phủ. Một viên đạn, một tên địch!”.
Bước sang đợt tấn công thứ ba, đồng chí Đặng Quân Thụy được cử làm phái viên tác chiến xuống theo dõi Trung đoàn 174 (Đại đoàn 316).
Lần này, ông nhận thấy trung đoàn lên kế hoạch đánh địch ở nhiều hướng hơn, hỏa lực được tăng cường, lại thêm phương án khối bộc phá một tấn để phá hủy công sự địch. Ông báo cáo với Bộ Tham mưu chiến dịch với niềm tin Trung đoàn 174 có khả năng dứt điểm được.
Trung tướng Đặng Quân Thụy nhớ lại, để phối hợp và hỗ trợ cho cuộc tiến công của Trung đoàn 174 vào cao điểm A1, Bộ chỉ huy chiến dịch giao cho Đại đoàn 316 sử dụng công binh của đại đoàn bí mật đào một đường hầm đi sâu vào trong lòng đồi A1 và bố trí một khối lượng thuốc nổ chừng 1.000 kg để đến đúng giờ G cho nổ, nhằm đánh sập hầm ngầm cố thủ của địch ở đồi A1 cùng một số lô cốt trên sườn phía Tây và Tây Nam của vị trí đó.
Hành động này cũng tạo điều kiện thuận lợi cho tiểu đoàn bộ binh đánh chiếm nhanh gọn các mục tiêu còn lại trong trung tâm phòng thủ của địch trên cao điểm A1.
Đúng như dự đoán, Trung đoàn 174 đã nhanh chóng chiếm lĩnh toàn bộ đồi A1 – công sự kiên cố nhất trong toàn bộ chiến dịch.
Sau trận này, phái viên Đặng Quân Thụy tiếp tục đến theo dõi Trung đoàn 36 (Đại đoàn 308) diệt cứ điểm 206 án ngữ sân bay Mường Thanh, cắt đường tiếp tế của địch.
Sau ngày chiến thắng, bắt sống tướng De Castries và toàn bộ bộ tham mưu của Pháp tại Điện Biên Phủ (7/5/1954), Sở chỉ huy tiền phương được lệnh trở về căn cứ ở Thái Nguyên. Đặng Quân Thụy được cử đi dự Hội nghị tổng kết chiến dịch.
Khi được nghe Đại tướng Võ Nguyên Giáp tổng kết và nghe Bác Hồ đánh giá ý nghĩa to lớn của chiến thắng Điện Biên Phủ, trong lòng người lính Đặng Quân Thụy vui mừng khôn xiết khi vừa đóng góp một phần nhỏ bé vào thắng lợi của cả dân tộc. Theo vị lão tướng, chiến dịch Điện Biên Phủ là một trận quyết chiến chiến lược, trực tiếp đưa đến việc ký Hiệp định Gienève về chấm dứt chiến tranh, lập lại hoà bình ở Đông Dương, tạo cơ sở và điều kiện để nhân dân ta tiếp tục giành thắng lợi vĩ đại trong cuộc kháng chiến bảo vệ và xây dựng Tổ quốc sau này.
